All About Megan

My name is Megan Welch and I am delighted that Adam asked me to be a contributor to this blog. I’ve known Adam since high school, and have been involved with movies since before I met Adam. While Adam appears to have been comfortable with his love of movies for awhile, it took me years to realize that I wasn’t just a fan of movies – I wanted to and could make them.

In 2005 I graduated from California State University Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree in film. Since then I have become a working director – just not a paid one. You probably haven’t seen my films, but that is just because I haven’t hit the big leagues yet. I am currently resigned to the lower level of indy film “hell” which means that I am not only working on my films but a day job as well. This has not held me down though.

Since graduation I have directed three short films, began to direct a web series (launching soon!), and am currently directing my first self-financed independent feature; this only covers my directing experience. I have also done odd jobs from AD to art department on various indy shoots & short films for friends and friends of friends. I also spent my first year after college as a page at Paramount Pictures where I lead tours, stuffed press kits, worked audiences for live tapings, and most importantly had complete access to the entire lot and explored many, many productions from M:I III to Charmed. I’ve also begun to blog about every film I watch on my blog The Director Is In because I feel like I have so many thoughts about movies they have to go somewhere because my friends are good sports, but their eyes tend to glaze over when I go on too long or get too technical.

I tend to watch a little bit of everything in cinema, but I really gravitate towards films that have rich subtext, character arcs, and startling visual styles; I also hold a deep adoration for classic cinema and will probably wax poetically about the wit & savy of Billy Wilder on more than one occasion. My interests vary greatly, and I am told that I am very opinionated – but I don’t think that is always a bad thing.

My friend who graduated from Chapman a few years ago is also a working director so I know how tough it is getting that big break but in the meantime I look forward to reading your blog entries.
