Some movies blew my socks off when I didn’t except them to be nearly as good as they turned out to be, some movies met my every expectation and some movies in the end underwhelmed me. All in all I still loved spending 2008 in the movies.

I can’t remember a year though where one movie so completely overwhelmed me and became my standout favorite of the year before the year was nearly done – it’s not that I expected this movie to be bad and it wasn’t, I just didn’t expect this film to rocket onto my top films of all time after the first viewing. It was the absolute biggest surprise of the year for me at the movies…and when I eventually finish my 2008 movie watching you will find out what the movie is.

I wanted to take a moment and ask our readers to think about what you saw at the theatres this year and if there was one movie that took you by surprise, or even that you just dearly loved please leave a comment and let me know.

Here’s hoping for a great 2009!

I think I could probably bet money on what your "surprise" film of the year was. In my case, the biggest surprise of 2008 was most definitely "Gran Torino." I went in expecting an ok/hopefully-pretty-good movie, but when it ended, I was stunned by how powerful the film was. Guess I shouldn't have been after seeing other Eastwood classics.

More on that for my January feature . . .

Okay. Don't laugh, but my surprise movie was Mamma Mia. I know, I know, it's not exactly a cinematic masterpiece, but I haven't felt that good coming out of a theater in a long time. It genuinely made me happy, and for someone who likes movies that make her think, this was a pleasant change. I enjoyed the acting (anything Meryl touches is gold, and Pierce is just nice to look at), and the songs were pure Abba fun.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was my most surprising movie moment of 2008.

I wasn't too pleased with the sequels this year, that's for sure. I think the only one I found tolerable was Hellboy II- The Golden Army.

Looking at the comments on here I forgot about The Dark Knight too but it felt more like a stand alone film to me than a follow up and I mean that in the best way.
